The Hospital for Sick Children is seen in the distance at the entrance to Barbon Close. Apart from a converted Mission Church (“1876”) marked by an obvious church-like entrance on the right-hand side, an antique wooden sign marked "G. Bailey and Sons, Horse and Motor Contractors", near to the far end, suggests the existence of stabling and garage facilities on the photographer’s right. Nicholas Barebon (c. 1640-98), who traded as Nicholas Barbon, was an English physician, property developer and financial speculator. He gained a Doctor of Medicine qualification from the University of Utrecht in 1661 and three years later he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London. However, he suddenly turned from the medicine to building once this trade began to assume increased importance after the Great Fire of London, gaining great wealth and a degree of notoriety on account of his some of his dubious behaviour.
