Bankside Twelfth Night events

January 6th is the Christian festival of Epiphany and the secular one of Twelfth Night: the traditional end of the Christmas festive season. In recent years, the various folk traditions associated with it have been recreated on the south bank of the Thames in London.

The focus is the Green Man, an ancient pagan symbol known by various names including Jack-in-the-Green or the Green Knight; the character may also lie behind the legend of Robin Hood. The boughs of evergreen trees in which he is dressed represent irrepressible life.
