My view now from the same spot would be obscured by New Elvet Bridge (see NZ2742 : River Wear, Durham (2)), which crosses the Wear about 15 metres or so from the camera. The trees and nearest buildings on the right have been replaced by houses along Elvet Waterside. But the prominent building jutting out to the river's edge in the centre (I think it is the Durham Light Infantry building) remains in place.
Upstream on the left are Baths Bridge and Bede College. Taking place on the river and watched by crowds from the bank and on the bridge, is the raft race, a University rag week event.
NZ2742 : The 3rd Marquis of Londonderry (and 2 monkeys) Schoolboy legend in County Durham had it that the Italian sculptor was so proud of his work that he declared it 'perfect'. Then, when some waif pointed out the horse had no tongue, he committed suicide! Since then Durham University students have been known to paint the poor creature red on 'Rag Day'.
