Cromford Mill was a water-powered cotton spinning mill and it is located in the village of Cromford. It was the first cotton spinning mill to be powered by water and was the first successful large scale cotton manufacturing site. The Cromford Mill is considered one of the first modern factories of the industrial revolution and started the huge change in cotton manufacture. It was built by English industrialist Richard Arkwright in 1771.
Commissioned by Arkwright around 1780 to attract working families to his mechanised cotton mills in Cromford. The interior layout of those in North Street are well described in Clive Aslet's 'The English House (Bloomsbury 2008, Cap.10)'.
