A now defunct pub, previously licensed as Captain Gregory's Vaults, occupies this corner site at the junction of East Street (on the right) leading towards Market Place and High Street (on the left), a cul de sac at whose closed end is the entrance of the Erewash Museum. Charles Hiram Gregory was born in Nottingham in 1841 and then went to sea on board a merchant ship as an apprentice, aged 17 years. He was a sailor for 16 years docking in India, China and America. In 1872 he married Emma Jane Jackson in New York, the daughter of a sea captain and returned to the Derbyshire in 1873 taking over this pub that was known as The Old Wine Vaults at the time.
