Cycle path on the disused railway
The Wolverhampton & Walsall Railway opened in 1872 between Heath Town and Walsall via Wednesfield and Willenhall. Originally the line operated with rolling stock provided by the London & North Western Railway and was taken over by L & NW in 1876. Ownership passed to the Midland Railway the following year.
Passenger services operated until 1931 but usage was low and declined in the face of competition from trams and buses.
The line continued in use for freight until the 1960s with final closure for through traffic in 1965 with the construction of the M6 motorway.
