Haystack boiler - Califat Colliery
Haystack boiler - Califat Colliery
This boiler has been re-erected here and now has decidedly non-original weather protection over it. Haystack boilers were the earliest type of steam raising boiler and were a development of the brewer's copper. There are few surviving examples to be seen.

The boiler has actually been erected on top of the mine shaft (a novel and non-original location), apparently for expediency and to keep the site tidy. The boiler had previously been used as a water tank sited at the lower end of the site. This particular shaft had housed pumps operated by an inverted beam engine. I must thank David Lyne for this extra information.
