NT1890 : The Mossmorran flare

The Mossmorran flare
The Mossmorran flare
Every now and then it is necessary to purge all the pipework at Mossmorran of hydrocarbons which are under pressure so that work can be safely done on the fabric of the plant. This is quite an event as the flame can be seen from a huge distance. I have seen it clearly from Stirlingshire.
In this case there were issues with the quality of incoming gas and it was necessary to depressurise the plant in order to make repairs. It was an exceptionally bright example and the previous day the flame was distinctly bigger and brighter than usual.
As often happened, there were many calls to the fire service.

The smoke is condensed steam from other chimneys which made a convenient filter as looking directly at the flare was uncomfortable on the eye and gave a CCD no chance of getting a decent image.

An interesting side effect was that the intense red light managed the difficult feat of making a nearby windfarm attractive to look at.
NT1891 : Little Raith windfarm

It must be hellish to live near to this, but is also an infernally good tourist attraction, well worth seeing close up.
