Greylag and Egyptian geese, Baconsthorpe Castle
The greylag goose (Anser anser) is the ancestor of most domestic geese, and is native to the UK and Europe. It is on the 'amber' list (see LinkExternal link ). The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegypticus) is a native of Africa, and was revered by the ancient Egyptians. It was introduced to Britain in the 18th century, but was not added to resident-lists until 1971. Its success has been such that it was declared a pest in 2009. The two species seem happy together on the Mere at Baconsthorpe Castle.
