Walton Monument, Alston
Walton Monument, Alston
Jacob Walton (1809 -1863) was a mining engineer. This 18ft granite column was erected after Mr Walton’s death in 1863, but taken down in 1960 when the junction of Front Street and Townfoot was widened. The monument was re-erceted in 2004, in its new position next to the town hall, just metres from where it stood for almost 100 years (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) Cumberland and Westmorland Herald).
