Maplesale, High Street, Lechlade
Grade II Listed Cotswold stone semi-detached corner house, LinkExternal link probably with an early to mid-17th century core refronted in the early 18th century. Built of coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins, it has a large external stone chimney stack to the left and a stone end stack with a brick flue to the right. Originally there was only a single front range with a rear projecting gabled stair tower, but later a smaller parallel range was added to the rear on the right, and then a long kitchen and stable range to the left.
The main front range of two storeys and an attic has a central stone doorcase with moulded jambs and lintel and a flat wooden hood, see SU2199 : Porch, Maplesale, High Street, Lechlade. There is a small gabled dormer window in the attic, two sash windows on the first floor, and two sash windows on the ground floor with relieving arches over them which are now cut through by the upper windows at sill level.
The left hand side of the house has a surviving stone mullion window to the rear of the external stack and two windows which are lengthened into sashes in front of the stack, with a small stone-framed light in the attic.
There is a stone ramp from the front forming a level path to the garden gate, formerly for pony access to the stable range at the rear. On the wall above the ramp is a wooden notice painted with a byelaw (probably 19th century) from Faringdon District Council about not obstructing the road, see SU2199 : Notice, wall of Maplesale in Bell Lane, Lechlade.
