Cross Keys Bridge, Sutton Bridge - hydraulic power pack
Cross Keys Bridge, Sutton Bridge - hydraulic power pack
The swing bridge was originally opened using water hydraulics with a steam powered pumping station nearby. The pumps were later electrified and then in the 1987 the bridge was converted to oil hydraulic operation with the power packs in a cabin slung beneath the bridge deck. The cabin also contains an emergency diesel generator and the control computers for the bridge's operation. The original hydraulic engines survive alongside their modern replacement and the old pumping station is now a dwelling but retains the pumps and accumulators.
