Independent man-powered ferries from/to Fife have operated here since the 12th century, albeit being brought under the control of the Town Council from 1639. However following a fatal capsize of one of the operators' vessels in 1815, an Act of Parliament was passed to regulate the traffic and soon steamboats were introduced. Ferry operations ceased when the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966. The jetty is now a boat repair facility.
