Quay Pend
Quay Pend
This covered passageway leads through NS3975 : Glencairn's Greit House (NS3975 : Glencairn's Greit House in the High Street). It was earlier called the Penmouth Vennel, but came to be called Quay Pend for reasons that are explained in NS3975 : Riverside walk beside the River Leven, a picture which shows the riverside area at the other end of the pend. See NS3975 : Quay Pend for a view through it in the opposite direction.

In the present picture, two old corbel stones can be seen projecting from the wall just above the opening; these were originally part of the Collegiate Church: see NS3975 : Ancient stones, Glencairn's Greit House and NS3975 : The College Bow.

The blue plaque on the left is affixed to NS3975 : The former Burton's building (the opening of the pend is also visible in that picture). Directly below the plaque is a foundation stone: NS3975 : The former Burton's building: foundation stone.
Glencairn's Greit House

The house was built for the Earls of Glencairn, and dates back to 1623, if not earlier. Although much modified since then, it is Dumbarton's oldest standing building. See LinkExternal link for a photograph of it, taken in the 1890s.
