Discussion on SS4624
River Torridge from Landcross viaduct
The crenellated structure, seen on the river bank, left, contains Hallsannery Lime Kilns [south], at SS 461 247. These were built for local landowner Lord Rolle who had a liking for crenellated decoration and indulged in firing cannons on special occasions. These kilns were also known as Cleavehouses Lime Kilns, or New Kilns, Torrington Road, and in 1893 were operational, run by I Baker & Son, builders' merchants of Bideford. There were also kilns at SS 457 249 - Hallsannery [north], now just a collapsed ruin.
