Trumpan: the old church
A helpful information board describes the events here in 1577 as "one of the bloodiest episodes in Scotland's history".

The MacLeods of Dunvegan had massacred 395 MacDonalds, who were trapped in St. Francis cave on the Isle of Eigg, by setting fire to the cave entrance. Clanranald, chief of the MacDonalds, sought revenge.

On the first Sunday in May 1578, the MacLeods were at worship in the church, and the MacDonalds, silently on this foggy day, surrounded the building and set fire to the thatched roof. All burned to death apart from a young girl who had escaped through a small window. She ran to Dunvegan Castle and raised the alarm, whereupon an army of MacLeods sped down here and mercilessly slew all of the MacDonaldss, who were buried in a dyke nearby.
