The tree in the foreground probably went over in the great storm of 1987, but has continued to grow in a semi-recumbent position. Willows are very apt to blow over, especially when growing on slopes in waterside situations. Pollarding reduces the area of 'sail' and increases a tree's chances of staying upright.
