Opened in 1849 by the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway on the line from Sheffield to Grimsby via Retford, it is hard to believe this was once a busy station with an overall roof. The overall roof was reduced to platform canopies c.1915 but the grand frontage with full-height portico, buildings and footbridge canopy were removed in 1977, leaving almost no facilities.
View south towards Sturton, Retford and Sheffield. At the time this image was taken, only three trains each way a week were calling at the station. This was one of them.
The original footbridge shown here was replaced in 2016. For a 2022 view in the opposite direction, see SK8189 : Gainsborough Central railway station, Lincolnshire.
