SP1233 : Spring Hill House, Blockley

taken 22 years ago, 3 km from Snowshill, Gloucestershire, England

Spring Hill House, Blockley
Spring Hill House, Blockley
Secreted amid plantations in an area bereft of settlements of any size - very suitable for a retreat for the Earl of Coventry when he wanted to escape what must have been the intolerable strain of living at Croome Court. Designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, c1760, who also did some landscaping, but remodelled for General Hon. E.P. Lygon, c1830, much of what resulted being visible here, and again c1890. Grade II listed.
