Photograph taken from Hagg Bank Bridge NZ1164 : Points Bridge at Hagg Bank on the now disused branch line that ran through North Wylam to Scotswood. The Newcastle to Carlisle railway line still in use follows the south bank of the River Tyne, protected from the water by its constructed river wall below the Scars NZ1164 : River Tyne & Hagg Bank Bridge from above Wylam Scars

Work on the railway started here in 1831 and the line between Blaydon and Hexham opened in 1835. The wall runs for 3/4mile, downstream from Hagg Bank Bridge. It is 26 feet above water level NZ1164 : River Tyne at Wylam Scars

There is a fine engraving made in 1838 by J.W. Carmichael showing the works on this section of the railway LinkExternal link The former site of Wylam Colliery on the north bank is now hidden by trees.

‘Pacific’ 4-6-2 No. 60009 “Union of South Africa” is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive built in Doncaster in 1937 NT2573 : Union of South Africa 60009 - Edinburgh. It is one of six surviving A4s designed by the Chief Engineer of the LNER, Nigel Gresley, currently operational and certified to run on the main lines LinkExternal link

The Hadrian Steam Special, operated by The Railway Touring Company, on Saturday 30 March, was hauled by Union of South Africa from Hellifield in North Yorkshire SD8557 : Hellifield Railway Station via the Settle to Carlisle Railway, the Carlisle to Newcastle Railway, then via the East Coast Main Line to York.
