Church of St James Buttermere
Grade II Listed Parish Church of 1840 with 1884 and 1933 additions and was built at the expense of the Revd Vaughan Thomas of Oxford, with stone from Sour Milk Ghyll. The original chapel was consecrated in 1507. East window by Henry Holiday, 1893. Stained-glass north window, 1903. One of the windows is dedicated to Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991) author of the well-known walking guides on the Lake District. Wordsworth said ‘A man must be very unsensible who would not be touched at the sight of the chapel of Buttermere’.
