Old railway bridge over the Tyne (detail)
Old railway bridge over the Tyne (detail)
It is not easy to get a good view of the piers of the old railway bridge over the Tyne just west of Hexham. The best viewpoint is a short way upstream. The bridge carrying the Border Counties Railway from Hexham to Riccarton Junction in Roxburghshire, diverged from the Newcastle to Carlisle line at this point. The railway was operational from 1851 to 1958. This is the middle pier of three; the poor condition is clearly visible with the protective boarding severely eroded and small trees gaining a precarious foothold.
