Sheep Hill
Sheep Hill
At the time of writing, Sheep Hill had recently featured in several newspaper reports: the site of the fort, and the hill as a whole, were under threat because of proposed expansion of quarrying activities; the quarry, marked on the map, is called Sheephill Quarry.

The picture was taken from the cycle route / footpath. The fort itself is on the summit of the hill, and cannot be seen from this lower ground. Click on the end-note title for other pictures, including some more distant views of the summit itself.
Sheep Hill Fort

Sheep Hill is the site of a fort that is marked on the 1:25000 and 1:50000 OS maps. The remains of a vitrified fort on the summit are within a larger, later enclosure. See LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for further archaeological details. The fort is a scheduled monument (see LinkExternal link at Historic Environment Scotland), and hence is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. Excavations were carried out at the end of the nineteenth century, and in the 1970s. As of 2017, the site is within a few metres of the operational area of a working quarry, Sheephill Quarry.
