Downs Pit Lane passes along the edge of Hetton Lyons Country Park as it approaches Hetton-le-Hole. The blue signs indicate that this is part of the Walney to Wear (W2W) cycle route. The W2W is a long distance route across the north of England, linking Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness with Sunderland at the mouth of the River Wear.

Hetton Lyons Country Park occupies the site of Hetton Lyons Colliery, which closed in 1960. Work on creating the park started in 1966, and was completed in 1993.
