The Masterton Memorial
The Masterton Memorial
This sarcophagus is one of the memorials that is specifically mentioned in the cemetery's listing text (see the end-note for a link).

The inscription has partly flaked off: "To the memory of James Masterton, who died at Liverpool 22 September [... in the ... year of his age,] and of his sister Margaret, wife of Alexander Breingan, died 5th November 1885".
Helensburgh Cemetery

The cemetery is located on the western side of Old Luss Road. It is depicted on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1860). The Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1885), in its entry for Helensburgh, mentions "a cemetery company, with a beautifully situated extramural cemetery" (the Helensburgh Cemetery Company was formally wound up c.1950).
