Julius von Yelin grave slab, Old Calton Burying Ground
Julius von Yelin grave slab, Old Calton Burying Ground
The grave slab for a German who travelled to Scotland to meet the distinguished author, Sir Walter Scott, but who seems to have been overcome either by over-excitement at the prospect or something in the local water. Scott kept to his side of the appointment by turning up for the funeral.

Julius von Yelin
Member of the Royal Academy
of Munich. He was seized with
illness while addressing the Royal
Society of Edinburgh, and died
at the Royal Hotel.
Sir Walter Scott attended
the Knight's funeral on 24th
January 1826, his first
public act after the great
misfortune* of his life.

James Gibson Thomson
purchased the ground on which
his granddaughter placed this stone
1926
