Claremont Close, Islington, London, N1
Tucked away, off Mylne Street - a road that connects Pentonville Road with Myddelton Square - is Claremont Close, a private road serving eight blocks of six flats set round an unfenced oval garden area. In the 1820s it was known as Claremont Mews and contained carriage-housing and stables owned by rich locals. In the early 20th century it was largely being used for industrial purposes. In between 1934-36 the New River Company cleared the site and built this "suburban-classical close with municipal neo-Georgian style elevations", possibly with employees of the nearby Metropolitan Water Board headquarters in mind? Two blocks were badly damaged during WWII (Jan 1941) but these were rebuilt to the original plans. The roof of the Angel Building in St John's Street can be seen beyond the estate.
