One must not proceed beyond this point if the red flag (at the top of the cliff on the coast path, but clearly visible from down here) is flying. The range walks and associated areas are usually passable at weekends and during August and have been open throughout this Easter weekend. This is one of relatively few areas still used for training by the military with live ammunition. As well as the closure of the coastal walks, there is an exclusion zone of several miles out to sea, such is the range of the ammunition used. Rounds poorly aimed, or ricocheting off the cliffs, can easily head out to sea.
