Between the East Quay and the railway embankment
Between the East Quay and the railway embankment
This had quite an array of still active railway sidings in the early 1960s - including two hand-propelled truck turntables to allow individual trucks to be turned through 90 degrees and then towed out onto the East Pier by tractor. Later in the 60s, it became overgrown and formed a habitat for North African thistles brought accidentally in on the Esparto Grass ships. (There were also frequent other stories of scorpions and other stowaway materials in the cargo:-) Later still, it became a stackage area for imported timber.
