Shepherd's Well Tunnel from Shepherd's Well station
Shepherd's Well Tunnel from Shepherd's Well station
The line from Faversham to Canterbury East was opened on 9th July 1860 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. On 22nd July 1861 this was extended from Canterbury East to Dover, and Shepherd’s Well station was opened on the same day. A link connects the tracks here with the East Kent Railway, although not directly with Shepherdswell station on the East Kent Railway – see LinkExternal link At the far end of the platform is Shepherd’s Well Tunnel at just over one and one third miles long. In this photograph taken looking along the down platform, the other end of the tunnel near Lydden can just be seen. The footbridges along this line are particularly attractive.
