Scots Pines defying the trend in Glen Mallie
Climbing up the south side of Glen Mallie, the north-facing slopes hold a remnant of the once mighty Caledonian forest. The trend is towards expiry, as many standing trees are dead, and others lie scattered where they have fallen. Deer grazing prevents regeneration, even though the slope still has some fine granny pines whose seed would quickly repopulate the slopes if the seedlings could survive the overpopulation of browsers. This pair dominate the view back down the glen from the northern slopes of Druim Gleann Leoigh - the taller one showing the typical one-sided growth when west-facing buds are killed by the prevailing winter wind. The nearer one, however, seems very healthy and symmetrical.
