Sundial on Stables House
It appears as if it is made out of shaley stone that has not weathered too well - there will be plenty of such stuff in the area, judging by the extensive areas of open cast coal mining roundabout. The numbers 1-7 and 7-11[and a symbol=12?] can be seen on the right and left, respectively. No other clear date or lettering can be seen, but there is a 5 and 6 discernible at top left and right, which could be part of a date? The sundial is on the wall of the shop at Dumfries House.
Dumfries House :: NS5420
A Georgian house near Cumnock in East Ayrshire, designed in the Palladian style by John and Robert Adam in the 1750s for William Dalrymple, the 5th Earl of Dumfries. It was inherited in 1814 by the 2nd Marquess of Bute and remained in the family until the early 2000s, when two deaths in rapid succession meant that the estate was crippled with death duties, and the 7th Marquess decided to sell it. The house has much of its original 18thC furniture, including many specially commissioned from Thomas Chippendale. Some of these were expected to fetch millions of pounds at auction, and were en route to London for sale before being called back when agreement was reached for a consortium headed by the Duke of Rothesay [Prince Charles] raised 45m to buy to buy the house, contents and estate in 2007. It is managed by The Great Steward of Scotland's Dumfries House Trust, with the intention to renovate and maintain it as a visitor attraction, with the farm estate being a self-sufficient enterprise. The house re-opened in 2008, and other parts of the estate have been re-opened for various uses, to provide both education and employment, as well as funding the trust's running costs and a hospitality and wedding venue. Both the house and the gardens are listed as significant aspects of Scottish heritage. Apparently Chippendale was well ahead of the modern game - he offered 50% off the price of the second one if two pieces were commissioned - well before BOGOF. LinkExternal link
