Grave of social reformer Josephine Butler
Grave of social reformer Josephine Butler
Josephine Elizabeth Grey (1828-1906) was baptized at St Gregory's Church on 30th May 1828. In 1852 she married George Butler (later Canon of Winchester Cathedral) who supported her work tackling issues relating to the poverty, employment and education of women, and in her crusade against the Contagious Diseases Acts. See LinkExternal link for more details. A beautiful sculpture and stained glass window by Helen Whittaker, in the church porch, commemorates Josephine's life and work.
