Smailholm Tower
Smailholm Tower
A tower house built in the 1400s and originally the home of the Pringle family. It was a favourite of Sir Walter Scott, who stayed at his grandparents farm, the adjacent Sandyknowe, in 1773, when he was recovering from poliomyelitis. By that time the tower was abandoned. It is now restored and managed by Historic Scotland, with an exhibition relating to Sir Walter Scott, border ballads and folklore and, on a fine day, excellent all round views from the battlements. The roof has recently been restored, with turf.
