New way to and from New Street station
New way to and from New Street station
On 28 April 2013 the main entrance to New Street station, to the south of the tracks, was closed. This will allow work to proceed on completion of the new station. The photo shows a new pedestrian route between St Martin's Circus Queensway, at the northwest corner of the Bullring, centre, gently down to Stephenson Street and a new station entrance, behind the camera. Doubtless the extension of the Metro (tram) will also pass along Stephenson Street. Note the interesting screen wall of living plants: south-facing, let's hope it has built-in irrigation.

Detailed maps show a previously unnoticed footway along here called Worcester Walk; it ducked under buildings in New Street itself (behind the buildings on the left). This isn't it, as first thought, but all-new construction cantilevered out from the retaining wall north of the tracks. A great improvement: the structural glass screen, right, allows a view of the platforms and trains. Guides with big pointing finger signs direct people to the new route, which will be much used for the short walk between New Street and Moor Street stations. You saw it here first.
