This picture of an oxlip (Primula elatior) gives a good view of the flowers and leaves of the plant in West Wood Nature Reserve Link .

West Wood is one of the Oxlip Woods in North Essex.

West Wood Nature Reserve

This SSSI is a mixed deciduous wood that sits on chalky boulder clay.

This is one of the "Oxlip Woods", with the Oxlip flowering early in the spring.

It has a history of coppicing dating back to the middle ages. This ceased in the middle of the last century but was resumed by Essex Wildlife Trust when it acquired the site in 1972.
