Church Street, Wooler
Leading northeasterly from the Market Place, Church Street (St Mary's Church is to the right of picture) goes down to South Road (the A697).
From 'Town and Country Trail', available from NT9828 : The Cheviot Centre, Wooler: "After a succession of churches on the site, dating back to the 12th century, King George III authorised the raising of a sum of money - thought to be £1100 - for the building of the church that stands today. Built of Doddington sandstone it was completed in 1765, though it has undergone modification since. In 1865 the clock was installed but, in 1897, a severe storm caused extensive damage, with stonework from the tower crashing through the roof as the result of a terrific lightening [sic] strike!"
