Steam 150
1863 saw steam locomotives introduced on the Festiniog Railway, to cope with increased volumes of slate. Loaded slate wagons ran from the quarries, at Blaenau Ffestiniog, to the ships at Portmadoc Harbour. With a ruling gradient of 1 in 80, trains descended by gravity. Empty wagons were hauled back up the line; initially by horses, then by steam locomotives.
May 2013 saw the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highlands Railways' 'Steam 150' event, to celebrate the anniversary of the introduction of steam traction. A token horse made an appearance, as did the gravity train. Seen just below Rhiw Goch.
