NO7055 : Craig Manse by Montrose Inchbrayock No. 3 is a Pictish, carved stone which was found by gravediggers in the burial ground of St Braoch's Church in 1844. Two similar finds of Inchbrayock No. 1 and Inchbrayock No. 2 had been made closeby in 1849 and 1857 respectively. These stones date to the late 9th or early 10th centuries. The earlier finds of Inchbrayock 1 and Inchbrayock 2 were donated by Craig Kirk Session to Montrose Museum in 1859. Inchbrayock No. 3 was moved to Craig Manse. It was photographed by Arbroath, based photographer A Milne and it shows a hunting scene. This photo was published in the 'Early Christian Monuments of Scotland' in 1903. Rev Dr Robert Scott, minister of Craig Parish Church, and who lived at Craig Manse, died suddenly on the 24th May 1908 while attending the General Assembly in Edinburgh. Inchbrayock No. 3 went missing that same year and has not been seen since. There was a belief that it had been built into a wall at the Manse of Craig but despite searches by myself and others it has never been found. Can you help to solve the mystery of the lost Inchbrayock No. 3 ?
