This evocative Grade two listed memorial by Sir William Goscombe RA commemorates the raising of the Northumberland Fusiliers and depicts them marching through the city headed by a drummer boy on their way to the front line. They are flanked by sorrowful children saying goodbye. It is said that the faces of the soldiers and the drummer are taken from photographs of the actual event as the call to arms gathered momentum in 1914. The monument was given in 1927 by Sir George and Lady Renwick in gratitude for the safe return of five Renwick sons, and recognition of the sacrifice of others.
