Entrance to Aydon Castle, Northumberland
Originally just a 13th century English Manor House but fortified at the commencement of Anglo-Scottish hostilities. Pillaged and burnt by the Scots in 1315, retaken by English rebels in 1345, and taken again by the Scots the following year.
