Rose Theatre site, Bankside, 1989
In 1989 archaeological investigations prior to putting up a new office block revealed the site of the Rose Theatre, the first of the theatres to be built on the Elizabethan Bankside. The prospect of its being destroyed as yet another commercial office development went up on top of it caused considerable outrage and various cultural luminaries became involved in a campaign to save it: Sir Laurence Olivier, who was close to death at the time, gave his last public speech in support of the Rose. A dedicated basement area in the new building, Rose Court, was created to display the remains, and there is currently (2013) a movement to expand this to cover the remaining portions of the old theatre site that still lie beneath the next door site.
