taken 12 years ago, near to Whitstable, Kent, England

Groyne, Whitstable Beach
Groyne, Whitstable Beach
Groynes reduce the amount of longshore drift, and help to reduce coastal erosion. They trap sand and other sediment which the waves have moved along the beach and prevent it from being moved too far along the coast. Ocean groynes run perpendicular to the shore, extending from the upper foreshore or beach into the water.
