This ceiling by Antonio Verrio was the last to be commissioned at Burghley in the year 1697, and took him eleven months to complete. It shows his representation of the descent into hell, the entrance of which is shown as the fiery interior of a cat's wide open mouth with the tormented souls in agony within (shown in this shot upside-down at the top of the picture).
