The old youth hostel at Crohy Head finally closed in 2004. It had opened in 1971, in a position of stunning isolation and beauty overlooking Boylagh Bay. From the hostel to the left across the bay was Glencolumbcille and the islands of Inniskeel and Rosninish. The An Óige hostel was a great favourite with walkers from Northern Ireland.

It was adapted from a gutted farm building by the addition of a third storey and outside staircase. Here it is seen forlorn and empty in 2006, with the familiar blue triangle missing from above the doorway. Please contact if you have any tales to tell of old hostels like this.
