NU2135 : Arctic tern on its nest

taken 11 years ago, 3 km from Red Barns, Northumberland, England

Arctic tern on its nest
Very close to the path near the chapel on Inner Farne, this tern was getting a lot of attention from camera-clickers like me! Interestingly, a National Trust warden said that the birds who nest beside walkways are more successful at raising their chicks than those in more remote places - the chicks' greatest predators are gulls, which are slightly wary of the human traffic and generally leave these nest-sites alone. The Arctic tern is on the RSPB amber list, see LinkExternal link .
