Former railway viaduct at Rings End, Cambridgeshire
Faced with the challenge of crossing 2 roads and 2 rivers between Guyhirn and Rings End, Victorian railway engineers built a slowly rising embankment for several miles over the low-lying fens, see LinkExternal link. For some reason, possibly the proximity of housing, the embankment stopped and the railway continued on this 12 arch viaduct. The viaduct used to support one end of the rail bridge over the A141 road at Rings End, but the northern end of the bridge was supported by a buttressed embankment, on which Guyhirn Station and signal box once stood, see LinkExternal link. The viaduct once carried the GE & GN Joint Line from Spalding to March which was closed in November 1982. See LinkExternal link for a photo of the viaduct before closure.
When this photo was taken the viaduct, along with several acres of adjoining amenity land and a terraced house, were for sale at an asking price of 150,000. The local council had recently stalled a planning application to demolish the viaduct even though the structure is not listed and after opposition from numerous local people the demolition application was withdrawn.
