Grand Union Canal: Leicester Section: Bridge Number 5A
Grand Union Canal: Leicester Section: Bridge Number 5A
This bridge carries the West Coast Main Line railway over the canal, and the crossing dates from about the mid-1830s, when the London & Birmingham Railway was completed. The canal's bridge numbering system was already well-established by this time hence the intermediate number between 5 and 6. The perpendicularity of the bridge's parapets to the canal suggests that the railway crosses at 90 degrees. However the railway converges at a very narrow angle to the canal which accounts for the near 60 metre length of bridge along the canal.
