The earliest reference to the church is in 1145 when Robert de Mowbray gave the "living" (income) of the church, together with Belto and others, to the newly established Augustinian Newburgh Priory, situated sixteen miles north of York.

The present church, dedicated to St Martin of Tours, dates from 1280 and none of the earlier church survives, although it was presumably on the same site and within the outer bailey when the nearby castle was beseiged.

The south aisle is the oldest part of the present church and has C15 windows added. The north aisle windows are the same period but re-used when the aisle was rebuilt in 1844 using yellow "London" brick. The tower dates from the C14. During the Victorian restoration work the medieval altar stone, known as a "mensa", was discovered and erected in the south aisle. The stone bears the five crosses with would be anointed by the priest during Mass.

In the 1970s the nave and aisle roofs were renewed, during which the clerestory above the nave, probably C15 in origin was removed.
