NT2673 : Wide path between the 'tails', Scottish Parliament landscape

Wide path between the 'tails', Scottish Parliament landscape
The designer is making a quite deliberate contrast between the high-quality formalised landscape and the savagery and scale of Salisbury Crags to the southeast. The long declining banks referred to as the 'tails' either side of footpaths in this zone are perhaps a stylized allusion to crag-and-tail topography. The inward slope of the low retaining walls makes them appear as though the weight of earth is forcing them over but it's clear that they have been designed and constructed with this unusual profile; it puts the walls into shadow, making them less visually obtrusive than if they were conventionally vertical. The landscape is explained, up to a point, in NT2673 : Interpreting the landscape, Scottish Parliament, Pàrlamaid na h-Alba.
